Its never easy looking for a new family home. When youve got kids, and perhaps even your parents living with you, you need to make everyone happy. But its difficult making sure that your new home has something for everyone. Moving house can be hard on kids, especially if youre moving to a different town or city. Its unlikely that youll find a home that matches every single one of your criteria, but you can go someway to finding what you want. Making a clear list of what youre looking for can help. It gives you clear aims, so you arent just browsing without knowing what youre looking for. You can separate your essential criteria from your bonuses and pleasantries. That way, youll know where youre willing to compromise and where you arent.
How Many Rooms?
A good place to start is knowing how many rooms you want and need. Some families want one bedroom for every child, while others are happy to have some children share. You might want a spare room, guest room, playroom or even craft room on top of the bedrooms. Perhaps you need space for your parents too. The other big questions, when it comes to the number of rooms, is dining rooms and bathrooms. Many houses dont have a separate dining room and instead have a combined kitchen/diner. Does your family need a separate room or are you happy for your kitchen and dining space to occupy the same area? Bathrooms are important too and are often proportional to the number of bedrooms. Can you all happily share one shower, or are you going to need more?
Although the wider neighborhood plays a big part in house choice, youll want to take a close look at the homes immediate surroundings too. One choice will involve how close you want to be to your neighbors. In an apartment or attached house, youll be sharing walls and even ceilings and floors with your neighbors. Youll need to take both their noise and yours, as well as the level of soundproofing into account. Can you live so close to your neighbors or would you prefer a 4 bedroom detached bungalow? Other things to think about are who your neighbors are; do you want to live near other families? You can look for other things too, such as a neighborhood play park or local store.
Its not just the people and things close by that are important. When you have a family, there are lots of things you need to be able to access. The first of them is schools do you need to be close to a school that your kids already attend, or close to the best one in the new area youve just moved into? Doctors are important too, and so are community services. You might want to look for a park, if not for your kids then for your dog. And dont forget about important things like safety and crime statistics. Maybe you want the safety of a neighborhood watch scheme or speed bumps on residential roads.
Dont forget to have a clear idea of where youre willing to compromise. Perhaps you can settle for four bedrooms, instead of five, or you dont mind living a little bit farther away from the local school.
